Atlantis University Falls in Hard-Fought Season Opener Against UIC
MIAMI, Fla. – The Atlantis University Men’s Soccer team opened its 2025–26 campaign on Monday morning in a spirited contest against the UIC Eagle Rays at Kendall Soccer Park. The Atlanteans fought with energy and discipline but ultimately came up short in a 2–1 defeat.
The opening half was marked by patience and caution from both teams, as possession frequently shifted in the midfield with neither side able to break through consistently. Still, both squads produced two clear scoring opportunities. The Atlanteans nearly struck first when midfielder Sebastian Trotta slipped a precise pass into the box for Juan Zapata, who fired a strong shot on goal that forced UIC's goalkeeper into a difficult save. The home fans momentarily celebrated, only to watch the attempt denied at the last moment by the Eagle Rays' defense. On the opposite side of the field, UIC threatened as well, but the back line anchored by Macalupu remained resilient, holding the visitors scoreless through the first 45 minutes.
The game came alive after the break. In the 50th minute, UIC broke the deadlock when their No. 40 striker found space inside the box and finished clinically, putting the visitors ahead 1–0. Atlantis answered with determination. In the 56th minute, Juan Zapata capitalized on a rebound following a strike from Andres Bavarezco that ricocheted off the left post. Zapata stayed alert and coolly buried the equalizer, sending the crowd into celebration and leveling the score at 1–1. Momentum hung in the balance, but just four minutes later, the Eagle Rays struck again. In the 62nd minute, UIC's No. 15 converted a close-range opportunity after a sharp assist from their No. 36 midfielder. The quick response restored the visitors' lead and forced Atlantis to chase the game in the final stretch. Goalkeeper Rodrigo Maca and the Atlanteans' back line held strong to prevent further damage, while the offense pressed forward searching for another equalizer, but the breakthrough never came.
Atlantis will travel to Daytona on September 6th to face Daytona State College, looking to turn the lessons from their opener into their first win of the campaign.
